A year of washes every two weeks, four ways

Twenty-six washes a year:

  • Rinseless at home: 26 × $0.69 = about $18 of product, plus towels.
  • Hose and two buckets: 26 × $0.52 to $1.27 = about $14 to $33.
  • Drive-through base plan: 12 × $25.99 to $29.97 = $311.88 to $359.64.
  • Detailer: 12 × $100 = $1,200 on the Mississippi plan, or 26 × $80 = $2,080 at the North Carolina rate.

On money alone, home wins by more than $1,100 a year. The North Carolina menu lists its wash at about 50 minutes; if yours takes as long, $80 buys back that time. A $329.99 electric pressure washer adds about $6.35 a wash over two years of these washes.

The home math: one rinseless maker calls for 1 ounce in 2 gallons, and its $21.99 32-ounce bottle makes that about 69 cents. One soap maker calls for 1 to 2 ounces a bucket, 35 to 70 cents from a $44.99 gallon. Maryland’s environment department puts a 10-minute hose wash at 100 gallons, or as little as about 30 with a shutoff nozzle; at Virginia Beach’s 2024 rate of $5.74 per 1,000 gallons, that’s 17 to 57 cents. The first wash after a season parked outside

One carmaker’s manual says bird droppings contain acids that can eat into the clear coat. Go gentlest first:

  1. Pre-soak out of the sun. One foam label says to wait about 4 to 5 minutes, never in direct sunlight.
  2. Rinse before touching the paint. The manual blames skipped rinses for scratches; keep a pressure-washer nozzle 12 inches or more away.
  3. Hand wash gently with a mild car soap.
  4. Soften hard sap under dampened newspaper for 1 to 2 hours; scraping it can take paint.
  5. Rewax after tar remover, which usually strips wax.

Still rough? One detailing retailer says clay almost always leaves some marring, so it belongs before a polish. That’s where the $120 wash, clay and sealant visit earns its price. A mark that survives a careful wash needs polishing; see paint-depth readings before polishing. Then protect it: outdoor paint protection cost per year.
