It’s worth it mainly for light leather, kids, pets or a car you’ll keep, because spills and jean dye wipe off.
Some whole-cabin packages carry a 2- or 5-year warranty. The coating won’t stop tears, burns or worn bolsters, and it won’t lift a stain that’s already set.
What detailers charge
“Interior ceramic coating” covers a few jobs:
- a fabric protector sprayed on seats and carpet
- a leather coating
- a top tier that coats every surface and adds a warranty
| Shop (location) | What’s covered | Published price |
|---|---|---|
| MGM Detailing (Waukesha, WI) | Interior coating for leather and carpet | $150 |
| San Antonio Auto Detailing (San Antonio, TX) | Fabric protection on seats and carpet (3M formula) | $199 car or truck; $249 large SUV or van |
| San Antonio Auto Detailing | Leather treatment (Leatherique) | $249 car or truck; $299 large SUV or van |
| San Antonio Auto Detailing | 2 layers of interior ceramic coating on seats, console, armrest, wheel, shift knob | $399 car or truck; $449 large SUV or van |
| Martin Auto Detailing (Dallas, TX) | Interior ceramic package, Gtechniq L1 (leather) and I1 (fabric) | $300 car |
| Immaculate Paint Protection (Allentown, PA) | Leather, dash, doors, carpets; add-on to a paint coating | $600 car; $750 mid-size SUV; $1,000 full-size SUV or truck |
| Ultimate Mobile Detailing (Wesley Chapel, FL), mobile | Interior coating, up to 6 seats | $600 with 2-year warranty; $800 with 5-year; $100 per extra seat |
Read the fine print on what’s included. The San Antonio shop says its protection prices assume a clean interior. They are add-ons to its interior detail packages, so the cleaning is extra. If you need that first, our guide to interior detail price tiers shows what each level buys.
What it actually protects
- Leather. One leather coating maker says its product reduces wear, dye transfer and dirt. It doesn’t change the look or feel. It says the coating significantly reduces color transfer from clothing. Another maker’s leather guard is sold for bolsters, steering wheels and light leather that dark jeans tend to stain.
- Fabric and carpet. One fabric protector maker says its product guards fabrics against water-based stains. It repels water and oil-based liquids. Spills bead up instead of soaking in, which buys you time to blot them.
- Fit. The first maker says its leather coating is for modern coated automotive leather, not aniline or open-pore leather. Ask what’s in your car before you pay.
The makers’ instructions start with a thorough cleaning. One says to let the coating cure at least 6 hours before you sit on it. A coating goes on top of whatever is there. It won’t pull out an old coffee ring or set-in jean dye. Get those cleaned first. If your seats are new and slick, see cleaning new leather seats before you add anything.
None of the maker pages we read claims to stop cuts, tears, burns or heat damage.
How long it lasts
Interior products are rated in months, not the years you see on paint coatings:
- One leather coating: up to 18 months, depending on use.
- One fabric protector: up to 12 months.
- Another leather guard: 3 to 12 months, depending on how hard the spot is used.
The driver’s bolster and steering wheel wear first. If a shop sells a 5-year interior warranty, ask what it promises and whether it requires reapplication. For paint coatings, see our ceramic coating cost guide.
The dealer version is a contract
Dealer “appearance protection” bundles a product with a limited warranty. Our dealer coating packages guide covers the paint side. For the interior, one administrator’s published sample contract shows what you’re buying:
- It covers permanent stains from spills, pet accidents and dyes, plus rips and tears under 4 inches and burns up to 1 inch.
- You must call within 30 days of noticing damage. An interior claim needs paperwork from a cleaning facility showing the stain is permanent.
- On used cars, the remedy is limited to professional cleaning and re-dyeing, or repairing a tear.
- It excludes normal wear, headliners, steering wheels, suede, and cars used to carry people for hire.
- It’s non-refundable and can only be bought the day you buy the car. It isn’t required to buy or finance the vehicle.
That last exclusion matters if you drive for a rideshare app. See our rideshare cabin routine instead. In Texas, the contract says unresolved complaints about a registered warrantor can go to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. Elsewhere, ask your state attorney general’s office. This isn’t legal advice.
In a 2025 detailing community discussion, a used-car buyer asked about a $750 dealer bundle of buffing, a detail and interior protection. One reply noted that no coating can prevent physical damage like a tear.
Who should pay for it
- Worth it: light-colored leather (jean dye), young kids, a car you’ll keep for years, or fabric seats in a family hauler.
- Probably not: dark interiors that hide stains, a car you’ll sell soon, or if you’d skip reapplication. In a 2025 community thread, a detailer said black interiors rarely justify the cost.
- Do it yourself: one retailer sells a 50 ml leather coating for $59.99. The same maker’s page for its current leather coating says one car takes 30 to 40 ml. Pets add a different problem; see pet hair surcharges.
