Owners find this in different ways. One owner in a detailing community thread this June said a used car turned out to be covered in thousands of tiny paint specks at its first wash. Others find a fine mist after parking near a house being painted or a bridge or road job.

How to tell it’s overspray

An Oakland mobile detailer’s service page describes it as small paint specks or a rough texture, commonly from nearby construction, road work or exterior painting, and says it can affect paint, glass, trim and wheels. A Virginia shop warns that if nothing is done, overspray can become embedded in the clear coat and get harder to remove.

Removing it: clay first

Clay makers list paint overspray among the contaminants their products remove. One maker sells a clay block and a clay mitt and says the mitt works when used with proper lubrication. Our reading: wash first, then clay a small section at a time with plenty of lubricant, and check by touch. If marks remain after claying, that’s when a polish comes in.

Two things to ask before you book. First, whether the quote covers the whole car, since one shop prices per half. Second, what happens if claying leaves marks: the Las Vegas shop adds a polishing service at $299 or $399, and the Oakland shop’s range includes correction or wet sanding in severe cases. The Oakland shop recommends an in-person inspection or a test spot for an accurate quote. The Las Vegas shop charges $225 for a motorcycle and $25 a foot for extended vehicles.

For afterward, the Virginia shop suggests an exterior protection service afterward, and the Oakland shop offers a ceramic coating for $400 extra on a car.

Who pays

If a painting crew, road job or neighbor’s contractor caused it, photograph the car and the work site before anything is cleaned, and note dates. Then contact the contractor. In one large insurer’s published case study, overspray from a subcontractor’s painting job damaged about 105 cars. The subcontractor refused responsibility, arguing that the main contractor should have provided protective cover sheets, and the contractor’s liability insurer settled the claims quickly, with a cleanup company repairing many cars on site.
