In one community discussion, a buyer found a polisher on sale for about $130 with no pads. By the time pads, polish and a smaller backing plate were added, it came to about $190. That’s the trap: the cheap price is often the tool alone.

How a $155 polisher turns into $190
The bare tool is the cheapest line on the page, but rarely the cheapest way to start.
- One maker’s kit costs $15 more than its polisher. That $15 adds a compound, a polish and two pads. The same compound and polish cost $19.99 each, so buying them later costs $39.98 before any pads. The kit page also shows a compare-at price of $220.45.
- Another maker’s kit costs $30 more. Its polisher-only price is $159.99 and its basic kit is $189.99. The extra $30 covers two 12 oz bottles, three pads and a pad brush. One 12 oz bottle of its heavy cutting compound alone is $29.99.
- Long-throw kits can beat the bare tool. One retailer listed a 15mm polisher at $552 alone and $526 as a kit with pads, compounds and towels. Check the kit price even if you only want the machine.
Throw and backing plate, in plain English
Throw is the size of the orbit the pad swings through as it spins. One polisher maker explains that the backing plate follows an orbit set by the offset in the drive. Entry machines in our table use a 9mm throw. Long-throw machines use 15mm, which one maker describes as suited to average surface area. A bigger orbit sweeps a wider path with each pass.
Backing plate is the round disc the pad sticks to. One retailer’s beginner guide calls the 3-inch and 5-inch plates the most practical when starting out. One maker’s kits ship with a 5-inch plate and 5.5-inch pads, and list a 6-inch plate as optional. If you need one, a 6-inch plate is $24.99 and a 5-inch is $21.99 from one maker.
What a once-every-few-years polisher needs
Light swirls and a shine before wax or coating don’t call for a long-throw machine. A basic 9mm kit is enough for one car. Budget for:
- The kit: about $170 to $190.
- Wipe-off towels and a clay bar: our polisher vs pro correction guide prices both and does the break-even.
- Protection afterward: see DIY ceramic coating vs a pro.
Spend the extra $140 or more on a long-throw kit if you polish several cars or plan to keep at it. If you might upgrade later, one retailer suggests buying pads made to handle long-throw machines, so they carry over.
