Will the dents come out?

A car seat base presses the same two spots for months. The leather creases under the weight. A leather repair company’s care guide, which blames heavy items left on car seats for long stretches, lists what to try, in order:

  1. Damp cloth and low heat. Lay a clean damp cloth over the dent and press with an iron on low, without the iron touching the leather. The guide says this relaxes the fibers.
  2. Blotting. Dampen a sponge with distilled water, blot the dent, let it air dry, and check. The guide’s word for this step is patience.
  3. Conditioner. For deeper dents, massage a leather conditioner or softener in with circular motions, wipe the excess and let it dry. It softens the leather and helps reshape the fibers.
  4. Heat gun: skip it. The guide advises it only for people with many years of experience, because it can go wrong on fake leather.

Two cautions from the same guide: patch-test any method somewhere hidden first, because leathers react differently, and accept that some wrinkling is normal in leather. If the dent stays and the finish underneath has worn, that is where a repair price comes in (below).

Can you put a mat under the car seat?

This is a car seat question, not a car question, and the makers disagree. A child passenger safety publication checked the manuals in 2024:

  • One major maker prints a “Vehicle Seat Protection” warning in its manuals: protect the vehicle seat with a car seat mat, towel or thin blanket under and behind the car seat. The publication found the line in that maker’s manuals going back at least a decade.
  • Two other makers specify a towel rather than a mat, and one of them specifies a single-layer towel.
  • A fourth maker discontinued its own seat protector and says on its FAQ page that it does not approve accessories made by other companies, because they could affect the seat’s performance in a crash, and that no other accessories or seat coverings are approved as replacements.

So read your car seat manual, not the mat’s packaging. Whatever goes underneath, the install still has to pass the standard check from the national child passenger safety certification program: grab the seat at the belt path, push and pull with moderate force, and it should not move more than one inch.

If your maker allows a towel, it is easy to pull out and shake at each reinstall.

Crumbs, milk and what’s under the base

Vacuum under the base every time you move the seat, and wipe spills before they soak in. For milk, see specific car smells for getting it out of the padding. If the seats are perforated, the holes fill with crumbs, and perforated and ventilated seats covers that. On new leather, clean the coating with water or mild soap and skip heavy conditioner; our new leather seats guide explains why.

Melted toys and hot cars

Crayons, lip balm and toy wheels can melt onto a seat because a closed car gets very hot. The National Weather Service office in Louisville, Kentucky, says the temperature inside a vehicle can rise 20 degrees in as little as 10 minutes and 50 degrees in an hour, even with outside air in the 70s, and that the inside can reach 120°F in minutes and approach 150°F in as little as an hour. Cracking the windows provides little relief. Clearing the seat before you lock the car in summer saves a stained, sticky repair job. The same heat is what cracks dashboards; see cracked dashboards in hot states.

When a pro repair is worth it

A dent alone isn’t worth paying for. Color worn off the bolster, a crack along the crease or a scuff through the finish is. Four operators publish their prices.
