Two menus that print both prices

Most detailers post one price and leave you to ask which kind it is. Two menus we read on 2026-10-10 print both for the same list of work, so the only thing that changes between the columns is whether the van comes to you.

Operator Package, as listed Shop Mobile Gap
JP’s Auto Detailing, Buffalo area, NY Exterior detail: hand wash, clay bar, light polish, ceramic wax $249.99 $299.99 $50
JP’s Auto Detailing, Buffalo area, NY Deluxe interior, all vehicle types $299.99 $349.99 $50
Rhino Mobile Detailing, Mentor, OH Wash and wax, all vehicle types $150 $200 $50
Rhino Mobile Detailing, Mentor, OH Interior, small car $215 $250 $35
Rhino Mobile Detailing, Mentor, OH Interior, large SUV, truck or van $260 $280 $20
Rhino Mobile Detailing, Mentor, OH Full detail, small car $275 $300 $25
Rhino Mobile Detailing, Mentor, OH Full detail, large SUV, truck or van $310 $350 $40

Across every package on these two menus, the van adds $20 to $50. On these two menus it’s a dollar add-on, not a percentage, and it doesn’t grow with the job: the $150 wash and wax carries a $50 gap, the $310 large-vehicle full detail only $40. Subtract one column from the other and what’s left is the price of the trip.

For how vehicle size moves a price, see mobile detailing cost by vehicle size. If you want to know what an outside-only job should include, see exterior-only detail prices. And if you’re the one deciding whether to buy a van or lease a bay, that’s a different question, answered in mobile or shop detailing as a business.

What a $50 gap pays you per hour of driving

Take the exterior detail: $299.99 at the curb against $249.99 in the shop.

$299.99 − $249.99 = $50.00

A shop drop-off is four drives: there, home, back to pick up, home again. At 20 minutes each way, that’s 80 minutes, or 1.33 hours.

$50.00 ÷ 1.33 hours = $37.50 an hour

So the van pays for itself if an hour of your time is worth more than about $38 to you. Move the shop and the number moves with it:

  • 10 minutes each way, 40 minutes of driving: $75.00 an hour
  • 20 minutes each way, 80 minutes: $37.50 an hour
  • 30 minutes each way, 120 minutes: $25.00 an hour

The Mentor menu’s $25 gap on a small-car full detail lowers the bar: at 20 minutes each way, $25.00 ÷ 1.33 hours = $18.75 an hour.

None of those per-hour figures is a published rate. They’re our division on the published pairs, so run them with your own drive. And if you live well outside a detailer’s area, a travel fee can land on top of the mobile price; rural mobile detailing travel fees shows what operators charge for the miles.

Where the Mentor menu draws the line at $500

Two things push the other way, whatever your drive.

The first is the job itself. The Mentor menu sells a full detail plus a one-step paint correction for $500 and marks it shop only. Its plain full detail runs $275 to $310 in the shop, so the correction is where the money is, and that menu won’t do it in a driveway. If your paint needs that work, one-step vs two-step paint correction explains what you’re paying for.

The second is the calendar. The Buffalo-area detailer runs mobile service spring through fall, typically April to October, and keeps its shop open year-round. Book in February and you’re booking the shop.

A mobile-only detailer has no bay to fall back on, so ask what happens to your appointment in the rain. How to find a reliable mobile detailer covers insurance, state records and comparing two written quotes. Every price here came off the operators’ own pages on 2026-10-10; how we check prices explains the rest.
