| Line | Sample price | Fair range | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full detail, interior and exterior | $300 | $225–$400 | Fair |
| Pet hair removal | $50 | $25–$50 | Ask |
| Engine bay cleaning | $50 | $49–$80 | Fair |
| Clay bar and iron decon | $95 | $95–$175 | Ask |
| Headlight restoration, both lamps | $50 | $50–$150 | Fair |
| Travel fee | $10 | $10–$35 | Watch |
| Spray ceramic wax upgrade | $90 | $90–$100 | Watch |
| Total | $645 |
The sample adds up: 300 + 50 + 50 + 95 + 50 + 10 + 90 = $645. Take the bottom of every fair range and the same seven lines come to 225 + 25 + 49 + 95 + 50 + 10 + 90 = $544. Take the top and they reach 400 + 50 + 80 + 175 + 150 + 35 + 100 = $990. So $645 sits in the lower half. Overlap is the problem, not price.
Where each fair range comes from
| Line | What the menu publishes | Menu |
|---|---|---|
| Full detail | $224.95, SUV or small truck | Dream Maker Detailing, Burlington County, NJ |
| Full detail | $300, all vehicles | Detail To The Max, St. Louis, MO |
| Full detail | $400, SUV or truck | Premier Detailing, Kansas City area |
| Pet hair | From $25 | Prime Mobile Detailing, Loudoun County, VA |
| Pet hair; engine | $50; $50 | Clean Mobile Detailing, Utah County, UT |
| Engine; headlights | $49; $69 a pair | OC Detailing, Boise, ID |
| Engine; headlights | $80; $150 a pair with a lens coating | Mobile Detail of Indy, Indianapolis, IN |
| Headlights | $50 for both | Prime Shine Mobile Detailing, Virginia Beach, VA |
| Clay and iron | +$95 add-on; $175 more for the SUV top tier | Premier Detailing, Kansas City area |
| Travel | $10 on every booking | Right Car Detailing (multi-city, CA) |
| Travel | $25–$35 by location | Dent, Hail & Detail, Denver, CO |
The full-detail spread is mostly size, plus what each shop counts as “full”: see price by vehicle size and our price index. On these menus, engine bay and headlights are flat fees, so $50 for each is fine. Pay $150 for headlights only when the quote names a lens coating.
Pet hair removal, $50
This one is priced by the dog, not the car. One menu starts it at $25 and says it’s priced by how much hair there is. Another posts a flat $50. So $50 is fair if it’s fixed. One page warns that extra charges may apply for excessive pet hair, which turns the number you approved into an opening bid. Our pet hair surcharge guide covers how the fee scales.
Clay bar and iron decon, $95
This line is the likeliest to be paid twice. One menu sells it as a +$95 add-on to its exterior detail. Its top SUV tier runs $175 over its $400 full detail, and what it adds is clay and iron decon on every panel. So $95 is fair on its own.
The catch is the word “decon.” One $200 full detail lists “decon & wax” inside the price. Another menu uses “decontaminate paint” for a bug-and-tar step and saves the chemical-and-clay decon for its pricier tier. Ask which one your package has. If it’s clay, this line is a duplicate.
Travel fee, $10
Of the 12 menus behind this page, two print a travel fee. One multi-city service charges a flat $10 on every booking. Another adds $25 to $35 depending on location. A third charges nothing inside its home county. Ten dollars isn’t worth a fight, but a travel line should name a distance or zone, as our travel fee guide explains.
Spray ceramic wax upgrade, $90
A spray wax and a ceramic coating share a word, little else. That St. Louis menu goes from a $300 full detail to a $390 premium tier, and the $90 buys both a clay bar step and a spray ceramic wax sealant. Our sample bills those same two jobs at $185. If your detailer has a tier like that, asking for it saves $95. A real coating is another purchase: one menu starts its three-year coating at $1,400. See what ceramic coating costs and whether paint correction is inside a coating quote before you treat the spray as one.
Should be included, not extra. These sit inside packages on the menus behind this page:
- Hand wash, wheels and tires cleaned and dressed
- Door jambs and glass, inside and out
- A full vacuum and a wipe-down of the dash and plastics
- A wax or sealant (one signature package lists a “paint sealant (4-6 months)”)
Shampoo is the swing item: that signature package includes it, another menu sells seats and carpet at +$30 each. See what each interior tier covers.

- Is the package price final, or can a condition clause raise it at the car?
- Is clay bar or iron decon already inside the package? Which decon step is it?
- Is the pet hair fee fixed at $50, or can it go up once the detailer sees the seats?
- What distance does the travel fee cover?
- Is the “ceramic” line a spray sealant or a coating, and how long is it rated to last?
