Why tap water spots in the first place
The U.S. Geological Survey says hardness comes from calcium and magnesium compounds, plus some other metals. It calls 0 to 60 mg/L soft and anything over 180 mg/L very hard. When a drop dries on paint, those minerals stay behind as a spot. If spots are already on your car, our guide to water spots on a ceramic-coated car covers removal. This article is about stopping them at the hose.
A TDS (total dissolved solids) meter reads everything dissolved in the water, in parts per million (ppm), not just hardness. One deionizer maker sells a handheld meter for $25. It notes the meter reports total dissolved solids only, not which minerals you have.
The RV filter: what it does and doesn’t do
In one community discussion, an owner said an RV hose filter made his rinse nearly spotless. It’s a popular tip, so check what’s inside.
One three-stage RV filter’s spec page lists a sediment stage, a catalytic carbon stage and a “descaler” stage. Its list of what it reduces includes chlorine, sediment and scale buildup, but not dissolved solids. It’s rated for 0.75 gallons per minute and one season of use. A deionizer maker gives 1.5 to 2.5 gallons per minute as the typical range for a rinse.
Its carbon stage can’t do that job. A University of Nebraska extension guide says activated carbon filters will not remove calcium and magnesium.
So if an RV filter seems to help, test it. Read your hose water, then the water coming out of the filter. If the number barely drops, the minerals are still there. Gentler flow, shade or faster drying may be what changed.
Where an RV filter does earn its spot is in front of a DI tank. Some owners put one ahead of a DI tank to cut chlorine, hoping it helps the resin last. It doesn’t remove the minerals, though, so the resin still has to strip every ppm of them.
The deionizer: true spot-free water, priced by your TDS
DI resin pulls the dissolved minerals out of water as it flows through. One maker says to change its resin when its meter reads above 0 ppm. It adds that most of its customers see no spots at 1 to 10 ppm.
The catch is capacity. The same maker’s calculator says 500 ppm water uses resin about twice as fast as 250 ppm water. Its gallon ratings assume about 220 ppm.
Phoenix shows how much that matters. The city’s 2025 water quality report lists total dissolved solids of 464 to 716 ppm and hardness of 172 to 302 ppm, which runs from hard to very hard on the USGS scale. In one community thread, an Arizona owner measured about 520 ppm at his hose. Even with an RV filter and a small mixed-bed DI tank, he only got down to about 45 ppm, and his spots dropped only slightly.
| Option | Price (checked Oct 2026) | Spot-free water per fill | Cost per wash* |
|---|---|---|---|
| Better drying only | Tools you own | None; you beat evaporation | $0 |
| RV inline filter (SpiroPure SP-RV100) | $39.99; rated for one season | Doesn’t remove dissolved minerals | About $40 a season, not per wash |
| Small DI unit (CR Spotless DI-120) | $350; $71 resin exchange | About 150 gal at ~220 ppm; about 46 to 71 gal at Phoenix’s 464 to 716 ppm | About $3.80 at 220 ppm; about $8 to $12 in Phoenix |
| Large DI unit (CR Spotless DIC-20) | $499; $119 resin exchange | About 300 gal at ~220 ppm; about 92 to 142 gal in Phoenix | About $3.20 at 220 ppm; about $7 to $10 in Phoenix |
| Handheld TDS meter | $25 | Measures; doesn’t treat | None |
*Assumes an 8-gallon final rinse (2 gallons per minute for 4 minutes). Phoenix figures scale the maker’s 220 ppm ratings to the city’s reported range.
Two habits stretch resin the most. Use DI only for the final rinse, not the soap and first rinse; the maker says this makes the biggest difference. Keep the rinse short. Don’t count on a water softener in front of the tank. The maker says softened water leaves the softener with about the same TDS it went in with, so it won’t extend resin life.
When just drying faster is enough
If your meter reads low, a DI rig is probably overkill. Dry fast instead. Wash in the shade, rinse one panel at a time, and towel or blow each panel dry before it can evaporate. One coating maker says to rinse thoroughly and dry to prevent spotting. If you can’t wash at all for months, see winter washing without outdoor water.
A simple rule from the numbers above:
- Low TDS and a towel routine that works: skip the equipment.
- Moderate TDS, a dark or coated car, or washing in sun: a small DI unit, final rinse only, is fair value.
- Very hard water, like much of Phoenix: budget for frequent resin, or plan for dry-as-you-go washing.

For a mobile detailer, water at 0 ppm can’t leave mineral spots, one maker says, so you can blow panels dry instead of toweling. But resin becomes a per-job cost. Price it into your rates, and count each tank’s water weight when you build your rig. Plan where your rinse water goes, too; see our guide to wash water rules. Rinse water matters even more on big rigs, as in detailing an RV in sections.
