In June 2026 a detailing community ran a poll asking what operators spend on consumables alone each month. A poll gives you other people’s guesses. Your own number is easier to get. Our cost per car guide works out the per-car numbers from makers’ labels; this one turns them into a monthly budget and a shopping rhythm.
From the label to the month
The makers’ directions give you ounces per car. Multiply by cars per month and you have the budget line.
| Product group | Maker’s dilution | Cost per car | At 20 cars a month | A gallon lasts |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rinseless wash (Optimum No Rinse, gallon, $48.99) | 1 oz in 2 gallons of water; one car | $0.38 | $7.65 | 128 cars, about 6 months |
| Interior cleaner (Optimum Power Clean, gallon, $44.99) | 5:1 water to product; 5.33 oz fills a 32 oz bottle | $0.94 to $1.87 (half to one bottle per car) | $18.70 to $37.40 | 24 bottles, 24 to 48 cars |
| Microfiber (The Rag Company Rip N’ Rag, 80-count roll, $34.00) | Reused hundreds of times | $0.43 per towel retired | About $8.50 if you retire 20 a month | One roll, 4 months |
Three things to notice. The wash line is almost nothing. The interior line is the one that moves, because it depends on how much you spray, not what you paid. And towels aren’t a per-car cost at all; they’re a replacement budget, so count the ones you throw out, not the ones you use.
The lines not in the table, compound and polish, pads, tire dressing, glass cleaner, extractor chemistry, don’t come with a per-car number on the label. For those, write down the date you open a bottle and the date you finish it, divide by the cars in between, and you have your own figure. Two bottles’ worth of dates is enough.
Gallons or small bottles
Buy the gallon when a month’s use is more than the small bottle holds and the product keeps. Rinseless wash in a gallon is $0.38 a car; the 32 oz bottle of the same product is $21.99, or $0.69 a car. At 20 cars a month the gallon is 6 months of stock for $48.99, so the only reason to buy small is storage. If the van or garage freezes, see do detailing chemicals freeze before you stack gallons in it.
Two costs sit outside the label. The maker’s own store ships free over $49, so either gallon alone ($48.99 or $44.99) pays shipping, while the two together ($93.98) don’t; batch the order. And sales tax: in Omaha, the 5.5% Nebraska rate plus the city’s 1.5% is 7%, which adds about $3.15 to a $44.99 gallon. Put tax and shipping in the budget line, not in your head.
A par-level reorder list
Par level is the amount you keep on hand so you never run out mid-job: one month of use plus the days an order takes to arrive. At 20 cars a month:
- Rinseless wash: a month is 20 oz. Reorder when the gallon is down to about a quart. That’s roughly twice a year.
- Interior cleaner: a month is up to 20 bottles, or about 107 oz of concentrate at 5:1. A gallon is 128 oz, so the whole gallon is barely a month’s par. Order one when you open one.
- Towels: keep a sealed roll behind the one in use. At 20 retired a month, a roll is four months.
- Everything else: when your two-bottle dates say you have a month left.
Write the par and the reorder trigger on the shelf or in your booking app, and reorder on one day a month so the free-shipping threshold is easy to clear.
The month your cost per car quietly rises
Divide the month’s product spend by the month’s cars. If the number jumps, check these in order:
- Dilution drift. Mixing the interior cleaner at its 3:1 wheel-and-tire ratio instead of 5:1 raises a 32 oz bottle from $1.87 to $2.81, a 50% jump nobody notices at the sink.
- Waste. Spraying a whole bottle on a clean sedan, towels retired early, a gallon left open in a hot van.
- Price. The maker’s price went up. Then the fix is on your menu, not your shelf; see how to raise prices.
Only after those do you shop for a cheaper product. A $2.25 chemical cost on a $200 job is about 1%; your time, drive and insurance are where the money is, which is why the pricing guide starts with hours, not bottles.
