That gap isn’t a rule. Every price below comes from a detailer’s own page, read in October 2026, and the step up changes a lot from shop to shop. How we collect prices: methodology.
What the second pass buys
Correction is machine polishing. A pad and a liquid abrasive level the clear coat just enough to take out swirls, haze, light scratches and oxidation. Fillers don’t count. One Omaha shop’s page says wax or glaze “only mask defects temporarily.”
Prep comes first. A North Carolina shop starts with a hand wash, iron removal and clay, so it polishes clean, bare paint. Then the stages are just the number of passes:
- One-step. One product cuts and finishes together. A South Carolina shop sums it up as “Compound + finishing in one pass.”
- Two-step. A compound to cut, then a finer polish to bring the gloss back. Same shop: “Compound stage + polish stage.”
- Three-step or multi-stage. Heavier cutting first. A Louisiana shop’s top tier adds wet sanding of deep imperfections.
Shops also publish what each stage aims for. The South Carolina shop says its one-step restores about 70% of paint clarity and its two-step removes 90% or more of swirls and scratches. An Omaha shop puts its one-step at about 70% defect removal and its compound-and-polish tier at about 85%. Treat those as targets. Paint hardness and scratch depth decide the finish.

Three prices in a cell are by vehicle size, smallest first. A dash means the page doesn’t list that stage.
The step up from one-step to two-step isn’t a fixed percentage. Where a shop lists both for a car, it’s $200 in Las Vegas and Omaha, about $245 in Louisiana, $250 in Michigan, and $370 at the Phoenix detailer. The Phoenix prices sit on an add-on list beside its detail packages, and its page says the final quote may adjust for condition. Compare it with a stand-alone job carefully.
Why quotes for the same car don’t match
Vehicle size. The Louisiana shop’s one-step runs $449.99 for a coupe or sedan and $510.99 for a truck or large SUV. A Virginia shop lists $500, $600 and $700 for small, medium and large.
What’s bundled in. The Louisiana price includes a 6-month sealant, and the South Carolina one-step includes a spray sealant. Add a coating and the number jumps: the Las Vegas detailer lists coating with a one-step or two-step at $1,195 or $1,495. Our ceramic coating cost guide covers coating tiers.
Hours booked. The South Carolina shop books about 5 to 7 hours for a one-step and 8 to 12 for a two-step. An Omaha shop runs from 4 to 6 hours for its first tier to 16 to 24 or more for its top one.
How it’s quoted. Some shops post flat prices. Others price after a look. One Omaha page says the final price is confirmed after inspection, and the Virginia shop takes a $200 deposit on any correction.
One-step or two-step: how to choose
Pick a one-step if the car is newer or well kept and the problem is light wash swirls and dull gloss. That’s how a Michigan shop pitches its Stage 1. Our guide to a new black car swirled by home washes walks through that exact case.
Pick a two-step for moderate swirls, visible scratches, etching or oxidation, or for dark paint you want close to flawless. Several shops also steer coating customers here, since a coating seals in whatever’s under it.
Go multi-stage only for heavy damage, and ask whether the shop measures paint thickness first. Every pass removes clear coat. Our page on paint-depth readings explains why that matters. If a detailer tells you the paint is etched and quotes the top tier, check before you pay.
Thinking of doing it yourself? The DIY math is in buy a polisher or pay for correction.
What to ask before you book
- Which stage is this, and which size tier? Get both in writing.
- Are wash, iron remover and clay included?
- Is a sealant or coating inside the price?
- Is this a polish or a filler? A glaze hides swirls for a while, then they come back.
- What’s the final price before the machine starts?
If the finish shows rainbow trails afterward, see holograms after a paid polish.
