What a clean car does is help the inspection match what you reported online. That protects the number you were quoted.
What the appraiser actually checks
One national instant-offer program says its offer is good for 7 days, pending inspection. It’s based on details like installed options, dents, mechanical issues and local demand. At the dealer, someone visually inspects the interior and exterior and may test drive the car. If the car doesn’t match your online answers, the offer may be raised or lowered.
One instant buyer describes a three-part inspection. It covers the exterior, the engine and frame, and the interior and history. The interior part lists seatbelts, brakes, warning lights, infotainment and a history report. Its inspectors also use a paint-depth meter, which can reveal earlier collision repair.
Condition tiers point the same way. A pricing guide’s “Good” grade allows an interior with minor blemishes from normal wear. “Fair” means substantial wear and maybe small tears. Wear and tears aren’t dirt. A detail can’t move a car up a grade it doesn’t meet.
What each option costs, and what it can change
| Option | Price we found | Can change | Can’t change |
|---|---|---|---|
| DIY interior clean | About $54 for an interior kit, carpet cleaner and glass cleaner (Adam’s) | Crumbs, dust, light spills, smudged glass | Wear and tears |
| Interior refresh | From $85 (Pressure Mobile Wash, Houston) | Vacuum, wipe-down, windows, vents | Set-in stains |
| Full interior detail | From $195 (Pressure Mobile Wash); from $199 (WeDetail, Charlotte) | Shampoo, steam, stain work | Permanent stains, damage |
| Interior and exterior detail | From $269 (WeDetail); $349 sedan (Fresh Layer, San Diego) | Adds exterior hand wash, wheels and tires | Dents, deep scratches, repaints |
| Smoke odor treatment | $200 to $275 (NorBay Mobile, San Jose); $425 sedan (Firm Detailing, Los Angeles) | Odor treatment | Severe cases may need a second treatment (Firm) |
A Charlotte mobile detailer’s interior-only service starts at $199, and its full inside-and-out “reset” starts at $269. On an older, lower-value car, that can be a real share of the offer. For what each interior tier includes, see cheap vs premium interior details.
When a pro detail is worth it
- Stains that will come out. One lease company’s wear guide treats removable stains as normal and permanent ones as needing repair. Removable stains are exactly what a pro extraction handles. Instant buyers don’t publish stain rules, but the appraiser sees the same seats.
- Odor. Smoke is the hard case. California’s tobacco program says vacuuming, wiping and airing out don’t fully remove residue. A pro treatment costs $200 or more on the menus we checked, and severe cases may need a second round. Our guide to smoke smell removal cost explains what works.
- Pet hair. One mobile detailer adds $75 and up for pet hair removal. A deep vacuum at home is the cheaper first step.
When to skip it
- Mechanical or history issues. Warning lights, leaks or an accident on the history report drive the offer. A detail can’t help.
- Dents and repaints. Those show on the inspection whatever the shine.
- The car is already tidy. Clean it yourself, take out personal items and answer the online questions honestly.
A simple plan
- Get your online offer first, answering condition questions honestly.
- Do the DIY clean: vacuum, wipe surfaces, clean glass, empty the trunk.
- If odor or stains remain, get one detailer’s quote and compare it with the offer.
- Book the inspection within the offer window.
Returning a leased car instead? The rules are different. See whether a detail saves money at lease return. For general pricing by vehicle size, see mobile detailing cost.
