Illustration for Rental and Car-Sharing Cleaning Fees

A pre-return interior detail from an Orlando mobile detailer runs about $135 to $175 for a small car. So paying a detailer only makes sense for the messes these fees cover.

A first-time renter on a car-sharing forum asked the classic version of this question. The host’s listing said the car had to come back “just as it was picked up” or the renter would pay $150. The renter had a toddler and a five-day trip. Hosts in the replies said normal dirt is expected. The fee is for cars that come back trashed. The platform’s own policy agrees with them.

What “clean” means to the companies

The car-sharing platform’s guest policy is unusually specific. A host can charge the cleaning fee for:

  • vomit, urine or other bodily fluids
  • spills inside vents or between the door panel and window
  • large stains that would need steam cleaning or a full detail
  • caked-on mud, sand or bugs that need professional exterior detailing
  • a lot of pet hair

A host can’t charge it for crumbs, wrappers, sand or dirt you could vacuum. Exterior dirt a car wash removes doesn’t count either, nor do water stains, minor spills or smells. So cracker dust under a car seat doesn’t count. A spilled milk cup soaked into cloth seats might.

Rental counters are less specific. One national brand’s policy says a cleaning fee of up to $750 applies to a car returned “dirty or stained.” Another charges up to $450 if a car comes back with pet hair or smells.

Company (policy page) Smoking fee Other cleaning fees
Turo (car-sharing) $150 + 3% $150 + 3% for eligible messes only
Avis Up to $450 Up to $450 for pet hair or smells
Budget Up to $750 Up to $750 if dirty or stained
Thrifty $400 $50–$250 for excess pet hair or soiling

A quick pre-return clean

You don’t need a detail for normal use. Do this on the way back:

  1. Bag all trash, including door pockets and under the seats.
  2. Shake out the floor mats and pick up any big debris.
  3. Wipe sticky spots on the console, cup holders and child-seat area.
  4. Take photos inside and out: each seat, the floor, the trunk and the dash.

That last step matters most. The car-sharing platform tells guests to inspect the car at pickup, before finishing check-in. Refuse it if it wasn’t cleaned. One rental brand tells customers to check for dirt, damage and smoke before leaving the lot. Photos from both ends of the trip are what settle a dispute.

When a detailer beats the fee

A real car-sharing mess, like a sick child or a big stain. The fee comes to $154.50. Orlando mobile detailers list a deep interior clean from $135 to $175 for a small car or sedan. That’s roughly a wash on price, and you’d need to book it during your trip. Often the honest move is to tell the host, take photos and let the fee cover it.

Pet hair in a traditional rental. Here a detail can pay off. One Orlando detailer lists pet hair removal from $100. At those list prices, a $175 interior plus that add-on comes to about $275. That’s well under a $450 cap. Our guide to pet hair surcharges explains why heavy hair costs extra.

Smoke. Don’t smoke in a shared or rental car. One rental brand says de-smoking takes a car out of service for up to 24 hours. A quick surface treatment before you return it is unlikely to solve it. Smoke settles into the headliner, vents and seat foam, as our smoke odor removal guide explains. For other odors, see removing specific car smells.

Orlando is a good test case. Its airport says it serves nearly 58 million passengers a year. Its new capital plan includes bigger car rental facilities. If your Orlando trip includes the beach, note that sand you can vacuum isn’t a fee item under the car-sharing policy.

How hosts document a claim

Hosts have 72 hours after a trip ends to report a cleaning issue. The platform wants pre- and post-trip photos, taken no more than 24 hours before and 24 hours after the trip ends. For smoking, it lists three kinds of evidence:

  • burn marks that weren’t there at check-in
  • a smoked cigarette
  • ash you can clearly tell apart from sand or dirt

Support says it takes 48 hours to review a report.
