New owners ask about this often in community discussions. One with a satin-wrapped SUV asked whether it could ever be detailed. Another, whose dog scratched a matte door, asked how to buff it out. You can’t, and we explain why below.
Why matte turns shiny
Matte paint looks flat because its surface scatters light. One carmaker’s service bulletin calls this “diffused light reflection.” Anything that smooths or fills that surface adds gloss, so polish, gloss wax and hard rubbing do the damage.
Another carmaker’s manual agrees: “Polishing causes the paint to become glossy.” Rubbing the paint while washing or drying can make it permanently glossy, it adds.
What the makers say
| Guide | Automatic washes | Wax, polish and gloss products | Other notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kia owner’s manual (2026 Tasman, matte paint) | No washes with rotating brushes | No polish, abrasives or cleaners that finish with wax | Remove any wax right away with a silicone remover |
| Kia service bulletin (2022-on matte models) | Do not use | Only waxes and sealers made for matte | Pressure washer under 2,500 PSI, wide fan, 10+ inches away |
| Polestar 1 owner’s manual | Hand wash as soon as it gets dirty | Never polish; no gloss wax | Don’t wash in direct sunlight |
| Maserati service bulletin | Hand wash only | Never polish anywhere on the car | Demineralized water to avoid lime-scale stains |
| Ford factory matte film (PPG) | No commercial car washes | No wax or polish unless approved for film | No mechanical polishers |
| XPEL Stealth (satin PPF) | Keep high pressure off film edges | Seal with the maker’s ceramic spray every 6 months | Light scratches self-heal in 20 to 30 minutes |
| SunTek matte PPF | Avoid automatic washes and power washers | Some waxes add gloss; use matte-formulated wax | Wait 3 days after install to wash |
Your own manual or installer’s sheet comes first.
A safe hand wash, step by step
- Wash in shade or early morning. One carmaker warns that sun dries soap into a patchy layer on matte paint. A Mesa, Arizona, film installer facing desert heat and hard water agrees: “Early morning or shaded washing is always safer.”
- Rinse first. Hose off loose grit first. If you use a pressure washer, one carmaker says keep it under 2,500 PSI with a wide fan tip, at least 10 inches away. Keep it off film edges, which one film maker says can lift.
- Use a wax-free soap. Carmakers point to soap made for matte paint. For film, one film maker says soap, water and a soft cloth.
- Use a soft mitt and light pressure. One bulletin warns that too much pressure “can cause paint finish blemishes to show.”
- Spot-clean droppings, bugs and sap quickly with a matte-safe cleaner. One manual says bird droppings discolor paint very quickly.
- Dry gently. One bulletin says to pull a damp chamois across the paint with light pressure, not in circles, and never rub with a dry towel.
What a matte coating or sealant changes
One carmaker’s bulletin allows only waxes and sealers formulated for matte paint. It warns that others “will add gloss and be very difficult or impossible to remove.” One film maker tells satin-film owners to seal with its ceramic spray at least every 6 months to keep the satin look.
A coating makes washing easier. It doesn’t make gloss products safe. The Mesa installer says a coating “does not give you permission to use the wrong wash products.” Weighing film against a coating? See PPF vs ceramic coating on a new car.
Scratched matte paint: why you can’t buff it out
On gloss paint, a detailer polishes light scratches away. On matte paint, that leaves a shiny patch. One carmaker’s bulletin says rub marks and shiny spots are “likely to require repainting at a matte paint certified body shop.” Its owner’s manual adds that on matte paint, a repair can’t be limited to the damaged spot; the whole part needs it. The bulletin also says the warranty does not cover the matte appearance.
Your real options:
- Satin film: wait first. One film maker says light scratches in its film self-heal in 20 to 30 minutes at room temperature, faster with warm (120°F) water. A deep cut means re-filming that panel, which is a job for your installer. See PPF install problems.
- Paint: see a body shop that does matte. Ask for a written quote for the whole panel before anyone starts.
- Turn down a “light polish.” A detailer who offers to buff matte paint will make it worse. See finding a reliable detailer.
Hiring a detailer for a matte car
A detailer can work on matte paint or satin film; the job is a gentle hand wash, not correction. Before you book, ask what soap they use, and confirm no polish, no machine and no brush wash. If a package ends with a spray wax or gloss “enhancer,” ask them to skip it. The factory matte film guide warns against car wash finish-enhancement products too. If a visit leaves shiny patches, see getting a detail fixed.
