How this estimate works
- Base price. Each service starts from its row in our price index: every detailer counts once, at the median of the starting prices it publishes. The headline range is the middle half of those prices ("most detailers charge"); with fewer than 5 detailers it is all of them, lowest to highest. "Typical" is the index's typical price, and the full range comes under it. With the first choices (sedan or coupe, light to average condition, no add-ons) you see the same figures as the price index; other choices adjust them and round to the nearest $5 or $10.
- Vehicle size. 7 detailers publish full rate cards with a price for each vehicle size. We work out how much more each one charges for a small SUV and for a large SUV, truck or van, and use the median across detailers. Where fewer than 3 detailers publish size tiers for a service, we use the median across all services. Headlight restoration has no size adjustment.
- Motorcycles use the starting prices detailers publish per bike. Those lists mix wash-and-wax and full-detail packages.
- Boats are priced by the foot. For your boat length we take each detailer's published per-foot rate times the length, then show the middle half of those prices and the median. At the standard length these are the price index's figures.
- Condition. Detailers don't publish discounts for clean cars, so "light to average" is the base price. "Heavy" adds the extra-labor charge 3 detailers publish for stains, sand, mud or trash.
- Add-ons. Pet hair removal uses the add-on prices 7 detailers publish.
- Market. If you pick your market, the base price uses only detailers in lower-, average- or higher-cost areas, sorted by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis's Regional Price Parities (details). When fewer than 3 detailers in that market publish a price, the estimate uses all markets and says so.
- Rule. Every part of the estimate rests on at least 3 businesses' own published prices. Aggregators and lead-gen sites are never used. If the data can't support an input, the estimator leaves it out.
