Several makers list a freeze point of 32°F. Some products come back fine after a thaw and some don’t. Here’s what makers’ storage sections say, plus a winter setup for a garage or van.
The question behind this guide
A dad who washes the family cars weekly asked a detailing community a question. About a hundred dollars of cleaners had frozen on his garage floor. Were they still good? Replies split. Clear shampoos and spray cleaners often came back after a shake. Some thicker products separated and never mixed back. In another thread, a new mobile detailer with no garage asked about keeping everything in a car trunk all winter. A popular winter post warned that some products are never the same after a hard freeze. Commenters described a quick detailer that formed small beads and a spray that changed color.
What makers’ storage sections say
Section 7 of a safety data sheet (SDS) covers storage. Section 10 lists conditions to avoid. Here’s what a few makers’ own sheets and pages say:
| Product type | Maker document | Cold limit | Heat limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Car wash soap | Turtle Wax Car Wash SDS | Keep from freezing | Don’t store above 120°F (49°C) |
| Car wash soap | Chemical Guys Mr. Pink SDS | Don’t store below 32°F | Don’t store above 100°F |
| Rinseless wash | Optimum No Rinse Wash & Shine SDS | Avoid freezing | Not stated |
| Polish | Optimum Polish SDS | Avoid freezing | Avoid over 104°F (40°C) |
| Ceramic paint sealant | Opti-Coat Hyper Seal SDS | Protect from freezing | Keep cool; avoid excessive heat |
| Compound | Meguiar’s Ultimate Compound (G172) SDS | Not stated; freezing point “No Data Available” | Store away from heat |
| Pro ceramic coating | Cerakote AH-204 SDS | Not stated | Keep cool, out of sunlight; highly flammable |
| Consumer ceramic coating | Gtechniq Crystal Serum Light page | Not stated | Cool, dry place; use within 3 months of opening |
Three things stand out.
- The freezing number is water’s. Two makers list a freeze point of 32°F (0°C) for their products. One notes it’s based on water. A garage that drops into the 20s overnight is a real risk.
- Silence isn’t permission. Some sheets don’t mention freezing at all. A blank means the sheet doesn’t say, not that the product survives a freeze. Read the bottle’s label too, and ask the maker if you’re unsure.
- Heat limits are tight too. The heat limits in the table run from 100°F to 120°F. The van that freezes in January can bake in July, so plan storage for both.
Which products need the most care
- Polishes, compounds and sealants. These thick, creamy products are the ones owners most often say separated for good. Two in the table carry an explicit freezing warning. Replacing a ruined bottle is cheaper than redoing a customer’s paint.
- Soaps, rinseless washes and spray cleaners. Owners often report these recover after a thaw. But three makers in the table still say to keep them from freezing. Treat recovery as luck, not a plan.
- Ceramic coatings. The two coating documents above don’t give a freezing limit. Their concern is heat and sunlight, and one pro coating is listed as highly flammable. Keep coatings away from space heaters. Cold also limits when you can apply them; our winter business guide covers that and wash cutoffs.
If something froze anyway
These are the steps detailers in the community threads describe. They aren’t a maker’s guarantee.
- Let the bottle thaw on its own at room temperature.
- Shake or stir it well, then look. It should match its old color and thickness.
- Test it on a small spot before using it on a customer’s car.
- Replace anything that stays separated, curdled, gritty or watery. Replace anything that leaves spots, too.
- For coatings and other pricey products, contact the maker before you use a bottle that froze.
A winter storage setup
Fargo, North Dakota, shows how long the cold can last. NOAA’s 1991–2020 normals give it about 42 nights a year at or below 0°F. About 93 days have a high at or below 32°F. Its normal January low is 0.2°F. An unheated garage or a parked van there can sit below freezing for weeks.
- Keep the main stock indoors. A supplier’s winter guide for mobile detailers says to store bulk chemicals in heated garages or insulated boxes. A laundry room, basement or closet works.
- Carry one day’s supply. The same guide says to keep only a day’s supply in the mobile unit. Fill smaller jugs each morning. Bring the van stock in at night. See our guide to a trunk, van or trailer rig for layout ideas.
- Treat an insulated box as a delay, not a heater. With no heat source inside, it only slows the cooling on a long, cold night.
- Date your bottles. Write the opening date on coatings. One coating maker says to use an opened bottle within 3 months and an unopened one within 12.
- Plan the water too. The same winter guide says to drain hoses and pressure washers each day when it freezes. Washing at home with the spigot off? See washing a car in winter without outdoor water.
