Illustration for Detailing Product Cost per Car

Here’s how to work out your own cost per car from the bottle price and the label’s dilution ratio. We also show where buying bigger saves money.

The question behind this guide

A newer detailer added up their products and asked a detailing forum if about $20 a car was normal. How could they bring it down? Replies split two ways. Hobbyists tallied their wash chemicals at a few dollars. Others said the real list is longer: towels, polishing pads, utilities, insurance. Both are right, and the math below shows why.

Three numbers from the label

  1. Cost per ounce = list price ÷ ounces in the container. A gallon is 128 oz.
  2. Ounces per car = what the maker’s directions say to mix for one bucket, one spray bottle or one vehicle.
  3. Cost per car = cost per ounce × ounces per car.

Read the ratio carefully. The cleaner in our table writes ratios as water to product, so 5:1 means one part product in six. A 32 oz bottle at 5:1 holds about 5.3 oz of concentrate (32 ÷ 6).

What the label math gives

We read list prices from each maker’s own site on 2026-10-09. Your price may differ with sales, shipping and tax. See how we get these numbers.

Product type (maker, size) List price Maker’s directions Product cost
Rinseless wash (Optimum No Rinse, gallon) $48.99 1 oz in 2 gallons water; under 2 gallons per car $0.38 per car
Rinseless wash (Optimum No Rinse, 32 oz) $21.99 Same $0.69 per car

Pro ceramic coating (Optimum Paint Guard) $90 (10cc) or $250 (30cc) 10cc for one vehicle, 30cc for three $90 or about $83 per car

Where does $20 a car come from?

Run a basic job through the table. A bucket wash with 2 oz of gallon soap is $0.70. A full 32 oz interior bottle of the all-purpose cleaner, mixed at 5:1, is $1.87. That bottle may cover more than one job. That’s $2.57 in wash and interior chemicals.

A higher number usually comes from one of these:

  • Coatings and sealants. One pro coating’s single-car syringe is $90 on its own. Price coating work as its own service. Our ceramic coating cost guide shows what shops charge.
  • Small bottles. The same rinseless wash costs $0.69 a car from the 32 oz bottle against $0.38 from the gallon.
  • Towels and pads. A wash towel from a 25 pack is $2.56. Reusable towels spread that over many jobs; one towel maker says its roll towels can be reused hundreds of times. But a towel you toss after a greasy wheel is a real cost on that car.
  • Over-pouring. A “splash” instead of a measured ounce can double the soap line. A cheap measuring cup and a marked spray bottle fix it.

Track four lines separately: wash chemicals, interior chemicals, protection products, and towels and pads. Then you know which one to work on.

When gallons make sense

Bigger containers won on all three chemicals we compared. Per ounce, the gallon was 44% cheaper for the rinseless wash, 49% for the soap and 54% for the all-purpose cleaner. That makes gallons a good fit for anything you use on every car.

Three limits apply.

  • Use it before it goes bad. Two makers’ safety data sheets we read say to keep their car wash products from freezing. A gallon that sits in a cold van all winter can be a loss. See how detailing chemicals hold up in a cold garage or van.
  • Stay inside the label range. The math above assumes the maker’s directions. Mixing outside them changes the cost and the result.
  • Count tax and shipping. In Kentucky, the 6% state sales tax adds about $2.70 to a $44.99 gallon. The state has no local sales tax on top.

Put the number in your price

Once you know your product cost per car, it becomes the materials line in your cost floor. Our guide to setting mobile detailing prices walks through the other lines: labor, drive time and overhead. On a wash, product cost is a small line in the table above. Coatings and heavy interiors can move it, so price them as add-ons. A maintenance wash uses mostly the cheap lines. If your cost climbs, raising prices without losing regulars covers how to tell customers.

Your own receipts are what count. Redo the math whenever a price or ratio changes.
