Owners ask about this often. One asked on a detailing forum whether detailers normally leave a customer’s car idling with the heater on to dry it, and for how long (community discussion). The reply from a detailer: windows down, let it air dry, and add a fan for a cross breeze if it needs to go faster. Another owner, who no longer drove the car, worried the damp seats would grow mold.
How long detailers say drying takes
| Detailer (area) | Warm weather | Cold or overcast | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Motorcity Detailing (Huntsville, AL) | About 90% dry in 1.5 hours | 2 to 4 hours | Fan or air mover on each seat |
| R3 Detailing | About 90% dry in 2.5 hours | 3 to 5 hours | Check each seat every 15 to 20 minutes under a fan |
| Sweet’s Auto Detailing (Dallas area) | 2 to 3 hours | 3 to 6 hours | Too much water can leave seats wet for days |
| NYC Mobile Car Wash (New York City) | Light cleaning 1 to 2 hours | Moderate 3 to 5; deep 6 to 12 | Humidity makes drying harder in the city |
Times from each detailer’s own page, checked October 2026. How we research: methodology.
Why some seats stay wet
Too much water. Three of these detailers explain it the same way. A seat has a foam cushion under the fabric, and they aim to use only enough water and cleaner to lift the dirt at the surface. Too much water means longer drying, and one says seats can stay wet for days. Two note the stain is more likely to wick back up as it dries.
Weather. Three of the four detailers give a longer time for cold or overcast days, and two say sun helps bake the moisture out. The New York company says the city’s humidity makes drying harder.
Method. A full shampoo-and-extraction job puts more water in than a light clean. The New York company’s own ranges run from 1 to 2 hours for light cleaning to 6 to 12 for a deep clean. Our guide to interior detail price tiers shows which packages include extraction.
What speeds it up
The methods detailers describe on their own pages:
- Fans or air movers. Two detailers suggest putting a fan or air mover on a seat and checking it every 15 to 20 minutes.
- Towels. Several detailers start by pressing dry towels into the seats to soak up surface water, using more than one towel per seat.
- Sun and airflow. Two suggest parking in the sun with the doors or windows open, if the car is somewhere you can leave it that way.
- Heat, carefully. The New York company says heaters can help but should be used with care.
Two detailers also say not to lock the car up with wet seats inside, and the New York company lists closing the car too soon and skipping ventilation among the common mistakes.
When damp is too damp
The EPA’s guidance on moisture is a useful yardstick: if wet or damp materials are dried within 24 to 48 hours, in most cases mold won’t grow. Detailers’ own drying times are measured in hours, so seats that still feel wet the next morning are well outside what they describe.
Call the detailer first, and ask whether they’ll come back to extract more water or set up an air mover. Take photos and note the time. If the job had other problems, our guide to getting a bad detail fixed covers how to raise it.
Questions to ask before you book
- How will you dry the interior before you leave?
- How long should the seats take to dry, given today’s weather?
- Do you use an extractor to pull the water back out after shampooing?
- If the seats are still wet tomorrow, will you come back?
Have perforated or ventilated seats? They need a lighter touch; see cleaning perforated seats.
