Marker and pen
The maker’s upholstery tip is short. Dampen a sponge with rubbing alcohol and blot the stain, changing the sponge as often as needed. Then apply an upholstery or rug shampoo according to its container. If the stain remains, it names a spot-and-soil remover as the next step. Every tip on its site carries the same two lines: results may vary, and test first.
Two habits help keep that from leaving a ring:
- Blot, never rub. One car maker’s manual puts it bluntly: never scrape or rub a stain, because it may destroy the upholstery.
- Change the sponge. The maker says to swap it as often as needed, so you aren’t dabbing with a sponge already loaded with ink.
The maker’s tip covers markers; it doesn’t mention ballpoint pen, so test first there too.
One warning. That same car maker’s manual says never to use stain removing agents or strong solvents on its fabric upholstery. Rubbing alcohol is a solvent. Check your own manual; if it draws that line, a hidden test spot is the minimum, and a pro who works on your make is the safer call.
Crayon
Crayon is wax plus pigment, so the first step is mechanical. The maker’s tip for regular crayons on carpet and upholstery: scrape off as much crayon as possible with a dull knife or metal spoon, then use a carpet cleaner per the manufacturer’s direction and repeat as needed. It offers an ink-and-stain remover as an alternative.
For its washable crayons, the method is gentler: scrape, then spray or dampen with warm water, apply liquid dish soap, work it in with a small stiff bristle brush, and wipe with a damp sponge. Repeat if needed.
Melted crayon is the version parents meet in July, and it’s why the scrape step comes first: get the solid wax off before any liquid goes on. If the seats are perforated, take extra care; see perforated and ventilated seats. For the broader list of what a hot car does to seats and toys, see child car seat dents and crumbs.
Why a headliner is different
A seat can take a shampoo and an extractor. A headliner can’t. The fabric is glued to a board, and soaking, scrubbing or heat can make that glue fail; our suede headliner guide covers why liners sag and what the suede-microfiber maker says to avoid. The car maker’s manual for the headlining is three lines: brush carefully with a soft brush, follow the fabric cleaner’s instructions, then wipe with a soft, lint-free cloth. Then an “important” note: careless cleaning may damage the headlining.
So for marker on a headliner:
- Put the alcohol on the sponge, not the ceiling, and keep it barely damp.
- Blot, with no circles and no pressure.
- Stop when the mark fades rather than chasing the last trace. A faint shadow is better than a sag.
The manual has one more line that applies to seats more than ceilings: clean all the upholstery, even for a few individual stains, to avoid permanent watermarks. That’s the stain ring. On a headliner, wetting a whole panel is exactly the sag risk, which is one reason to hand a big mark to a pro.
What a detailer charges
| Detailer (location) | Published price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Heartland Auto Detailing (Manhattan, KS) | Stain removal from $10 per area; headliner spot cleaning from $25 | If the stain isn’t removed to your satisfaction, 50% off the stain fee |
| Seriously Clean Detailing (Queens, NY) | Pet hair or stain removal $30 | Results depend on material and condition |
| T.M.E Mobile Detailing (Largo, FL) | Headliner cleaning $50; cloth seat shampoo and stain removal $50 | Up to 1 hour each |
| Westchester Auto Spa (White Plains, NY) | Headliner $50; stain treatment price varies | Add-on to its interior packages |
| Xiong’s Auto Detailing | Headliner stain cleaning $20 to $200 | Priced by severity; may decline damaged headliners |
The spread is wide because one menu says headliner pricing varies with stain severity, and the same shop may decline a headliner that is already damaged. If the whole interior needs it, the stain is usually folded into a package; see interior detail price tiers.
