The question
In one community discussion, a new owner of a used hatchback found hay and mud packed all over the interior. He asked whether to unbolt the front seats and make a day of it. The replies split. Some said seats-out is the most thorough way. A detailer with ten years in the trade said sliding each seat fully forward and back has always been enough. Others noted that many shops won’t pull seats on newer cars, or ask the owner to sign a waiver first.
Three routes compared
Prices are from each seller’s own page on October 9, 2026.

What comes out with the seats in place
Most of it. Slide each front seat all the way forward and clean behind it. Then slide it all the way back and clean in front. An extra-long crevice tool reaches between the rails and along the seat base. Do this before you wet anything, so dry hay and grit come out instead of turning to mud.
A portable upholstery cleaner then handles the seat fabric and carpet. One maker sells an auto spot solution for its portable cleaners. For seats with holes in them, see our guide to perforated and ventilated seats. For white road-salt rings, see salt stains in car carpet.
What only comes out with the seats out
Pulling the seats earns its time in a few cases:
- Dirt packed under the seat base where no tool reaches.
- A spill that soaked through the carpet under the seat.
- A car you’ll keep for years, where you want to see every corner once.
The part to leave to the manual
Front seats are tied into the airbag system on many cars. One carmaker’s bulletin says the front passenger seat has sensors that classify the occupant’s weight and turn the passenger airbag on or off. Another carmaker’s bulletin, for removing a passenger seat, says to disconnect the battery’s negative terminal first. It warns that skipping this step may cause accidental airbag deployment. The same bulletin lists a torque of 29 to 39 lb-ft for the seat bolts. Look up your own car’s steps before you unbolt anything. If the airbag light stays on afterward, have the car checked.
Why a shop’s extraction is different
Shop-grade extractors are a different tool from a home cleaner. One retailer lists a compact heated spotter at $967 and a 4-gallon heated extractor at $1,475. Both include a built-in heater. Pro interiors also take time: one Chicagoland detailer says an interior takes 2 to 4 hours, and heavily soiled interiors may take longer.
Starting prices assume an average car. Hay, mud and pet hair often cost extra. See pet hair surcharges and our interior detail price tiers for what each level includes.
Which way to go
- Light dirt, cloth seats, some patience: seats in, about $135 of tools. You keep the tools for next time.
- Packed dirt or a soaked spot under a seat: seats out, if you follow your car’s service steps.
- Heavy mess, no time, or a newer car where you’re unsure about the seat’s sensors: pay for extraction. Ask whether the price covers heavy soil before you book.
