Here’s what the extra money buys and how the cost per wash compares.

What the extra money buys

Cheap washers and pro-grade ones differ in three ways that matter for a car: water flow, serviceable parts and power needs.

Flow, not pressure. A $329.99 brushless washer from one maker advertises 2,300 PSI, but its spec page lists “2300 Max PSI at 1.2 GPM water flow.” The 2.3 GPM figure on the same page is measured at just 100 PSI. A detailing retailer reports flow at working pressure instead: 2.30 GPM at 900 PSI for one unit, 2.35 GPM at 980 PSI for another. More water per minute rinses foam and grit off faster. You don’t need the extra pressure for paint.

Parts you can service. The retailer calls its $499.98 unit “fully oil-serviceable” and rates it for 300 hours of heavy use. Even at a full hour of running per wash, that’s 300 washes, or 12.5 years at two a month. Consumer units lean on warranties instead: one maker gives 3 years on the tool and 10 years on the brushless motor.

Power. The $945 unit needs a dedicated 20-amp circuit. If your garage doesn’t have one, add an electrician to the price. The $499.98 unit is listed at 13.4 amps, which the retailer says suits a standard 15-amp circuit.

Cost per wash at two washes a month

The machine is spread over 48 washes (two years) and 120 washes (five years). Prices are from each seller’s own page on October 9, 2026.

Two years of the $29.97 plan comes to $719.28. That’s less than the $945 machine alone. Over five years the home washer pulls ahead. Even the $1,490.16 wall package drops to about $12.42 a wash, against roughly $13 to $15 at the wash.

What the sticker leaves out

Soap. One maker’s car shampoo is $44.99 a gallon and calls for 1 to 2 ounces per bucket. That’s about $0.35 to $0.70 a wash. Our product cost per car breakdown has more examples.

Water. It’s cheap. In Cleveland, the city water rate above the first block is $41.33 per 1,000 cubic feet, or 7,480 gallons, in 2026. That’s about half a cent a gallon, so even 50 gallons comes to about $0.28.

Spots. Hard water can undo a good rinse. A filter or deionizer is a separate cost. See spot-free rinse at home.

The rest of the kit. A foam cannon from one maker is $39.99. One retailer’s basic wall-mounted hose reel kit, with a high-pressure hose, is $595.30 before you buy a washer.

Which one fits you

  • One car, twice a month, no 20-amp outlet: a consumer electric unit is the honest buy. Look for the GPM at rated pressure, not the headline number.
  • You’ve burned through cheap units, or wash two or three cars: a serviceable 2+ GPM unit makes sense. Its cost per wash falls with every car.
