Fabric or vinyl: the question that decides the products

One company supplies topping material for almost every new convertible. Its sales director explained the difference in a June 2025 interview with an enthusiast magazine. Vinyl is PVC, an impervious membrane, so it’s hard to stain and needs no special protectant. Cloth tops have three layers: a solution-dyed acrylic face, a rubber layer that does the waterproofing, and a cloth backing. Cloth tops leave the factory with a water-repellent treatment that keeps dirt from sticking, and it wears off like wax.

So the material decides the products. The same cleaner works on both, but the protectant comes in separate fabric and vinyl versions, and the topping maker’s care sheet lists them as different products. A shop that reaches for one bottle for every top is guessing.

The maker’s test for when to re-proof a cloth top: when water no longer beads, or whenever you wax the car. The trade magazine suggests cloth every three to six months and vinyl every four to six weeks.

Why wands and tunnels mark tops

The topping maker’s own care page says keeping a soft top in shape means skipping high-pressure washes and using the right cleaners for vinyl or cloth. Its sales director puts it plainly: you wouldn’t use a pressure washer on your paint, so don’t use it on your top, and self-serve wands can be very high pressure. On tunnel washes, his bigger worry is the force on the top’s frame rather than the fabric. His advice is to hand wash.

For what a tunnel does and doesn’t clean on the rest of the car, see what tunnel and touchless washes miss.

What the care sheet says to do instead:

  1. Vacuum the top with a brush attachment, then rinse to lift loose grit. Use no detergent.
  2. Spray the cleaner over the whole top while it’s wet. Let it soak 10 to 20 minutes.
  3. Scrub lightly with a soft nylon brush or terry cloth.
  4. Rinse until no foam remains, and judge the result after the top dries, because spots hide when wet.
  5. For stubborn stains, the sheet gives a dilute bleach mix, with a warning that excessive soaking weakens seam threads.
  6. Once dry, apply the matching protectant in light coats from 16 to 18 inches, about 10 minutes apart. Don’t saturate it.

The maker suggests a thorough cleaning every two to three months if you drive with the top up. Bird droppings and sap come off right away; the acid in droppings causes damage you can’t repair.

The plastic rear window

Older tops and some new ones have a soft vinyl window. The care sheet calls it easily scratched, and says sun eventually turns it a yellow-brown you can’t see through. Rinse it first, wash with a dilute mild natural soap and a completely clean soft cotton cloth, rinse, and dry with a microfiber cloth or synthetic chamois. Never paper towels, and never rub a dirt spot with a finger, which the sheet compares to sandpaper. The sheet notes the protectant also gives the vinyl window UV resistance.

Faded colored tops

A red or tan top that has gone chalky is a harder problem. The topping maker’s sales director says there is no real way to dye or touch up an old top. The face is acrylic, so dye won’t penetrate, and it just sits on the surface. Cleaning and protectant can lift the dinginess, but not the fade.

Spring timing

In Charleston, South Carolina, the state climatology office puts April’s average relative humidity at 68 percent, with 2.77 inches of normal rainfall, and a local college housing page notes that the heavier pollen runs from March or April until June. That’s a mildew-and-pollen recipe on a top that stayed folded or damp. Clean it before the pollen settles in; see pollen on a fresh coating for the paint side. And if the car sat outside all winter, start with the first-wash sequence before the top gets its own treatment.

The care sheet’s last point is the one most owners miss: let the top dry fully before folding it down. A damp top folded into a dark well is where mildew starts.
