In Houston, the driveway matters almost as much as the car. We read the 18 menus behind the figures above one by one, and the useful detail sits in their fine print: whether the van carries its own tank, how far it drives for free, and what a rainy afternoon does to the booking.

A labor bucket priced below the nation

When we checked, three of the four services in the table above came in well under the national median, while exterior wash and wax sat close to it. The BEA’s 2024 price parities help explain it. Houston’s index for housing is 104.5, a bit above the national level, but its index for services other than housing and utilities is 95.6. Detailing is labor and supplies, so it sits in that second bucket, and the bucket has slid: the same row read 106.0 in 2015. Local services have grown cheaper relative to the nation over the decade.

The spread inside the metro is still wide. One Conroe detailer’s full detail starts at $100, while a Houston van’s full-detail package starts at $375. Those are different amounts of work, so read a full detail quote line by line before you compare two Houston menus on price alone.

Tank on the van, or your spigot

Of the 18 menus we surveyed, seven say they bring their own water, and two say they need yours.

What the menu says Provider (base)
Rigs carry water tanks and generator power; SUVs and trucks add $30 Fresh Path Mobile Detailing (Richmond)
Own water supply; an outdoor spigot helps on larger jobs Longhorn Mobile Detail (Conroe)
Self-contained for detailing, no hookups needed Proximo Detail (Katy)
Needs only water access and a parking spot CarPlay Mobile Detail (Sugar Land)
Needs water and electricity; has a Houston shop and a washing location for customers without either Hypergloss Detailing (Houston)

A self-contained van suits apartment lots and offices where you can’t run a hose. If you have no outdoor faucet or outlet, ask whether there’s a shop or wash location you can drive to instead.

Spring, Katy, Conroe: the outer ring

In our survey, 13 of the 18 providers are listed under Houston itself. The other five are based in Katy, Sugar Land, Spring, Conroe and Richmond. Two menus put travel in writing. A Spring detailer advertises no travel fee within its service area across North Houston, and one Houston operator says there are no travel fees for most Houston areas. If you live out past the Beltway, check that “most”. Our guide to travel fees shows what a fair mileage charge looks like.

Coatings spread too: a Spring detailer’s 1-year ceramic package starts at $300 for a sedan, while a Houston detailer’s coating starts at $850. Coating life explains much of that, as our ceramic coating cost guide shows.

Rain on 64 days, heat on 111

NOAA’s 1991–2020 normals for Bush Intercontinental Airport count 111.3 days a year at 90°F or hotter, and June through September hold 95.8 of them. Yet only 7.0 days a year reach 100°F, far fewer than the Dallas-Fort Worth report shows. Here, rain moves the calendar more than extreme heat.

The airport sees 51.84 inches a year, and 64.4 days with at least a tenth of an inch. No month is dry: rainy days run from 4.4 in April to 6.6 in June. June is also the wettest month, at 6.00 inches, with October next at 5.46. Ask how a detailer handles a washed-out slot before you pay a deposit; our rain-day policy guide lists fair terms. Spots are a local add-on too: one Houston menu sells water spot removal as a $99 add-on, and a Richmond detailer says most Houston-area cars need clay decontamination within a year. Our page on water spots on a coated car covers the cheaper fixes.

Where Houston wash water ends up

Since 1998, the City of Houston, Harris County, the Harris County Flood Control District and TxDOT have shared one EPA stormwater permit as co-permittees. Their joint stormwater program says water entering storm drains flows untreated into channels, bayous and rivers and on to Galveston Bay. It lists washing areas among the sources of runoff pollution and points residents to 3-1-1 to report dumping into a storm drain.

For a customer, that’s simply a reason to ask where the rinse water goes. Our wash-water rules guide explains the options.
