Two community threads earlier this year asked the same thing. One owner paid $1,100 for an interior clean, exterior detail and coating, saw beads for a few weeks, and three months later had a car that just looked wet. Another posted weak-beading photos two months after a multi-layer package. In both, replies pointed to a proper decon wash, then drying and retesting, before judging.
Why a working coating stops beading
Beading is a surface-tension effect. A clean coating is slick and hydrophobic. Anything bonded to it, iron specks, tar, traffic film, dried minerals, makes the surface rougher and more wettable, so water spreads instead of balling up.
One decontamination-product maker describes it plainly: over time, minerals, sometimes visible as water spots and sometimes not, clog the surface and make it less smooth, which raises surface tension and stops water and dirt shedding. Its page lists coated cars that have lost hydrophobics or gloss as a main use case. A coating maker’s maintenance guide says the same from the other side: a neglected coating loaded with road film and bonded contamination stops beading and sheeting, and it says its own coating-safe wash soap resets the surface each time.
A pro who sells a coating-safe decon shampoo notes that even high-end professional coatings get clogged over time, especially on the lower panels, and schedules clients for a decon wash once a year, or sometimes every six months.
One more thing fools people. A coating maker that sells a silica-infused wash soap says water may sheet off instead of beading right after a wash with it, because the silica keeps curing for hours. Sheeting after a wash is not failure.
The test coating makers use
Don’t judge by beads on a dirty car. One coating maker’s advice: assume nothing from the lack of beading; the best check is while washing. If the paint still feels slick to the touch or under the wash mitt, the coating is still there. If it feels slightly grabby, it has begun to degrade.
So the order is:
- Full decon wash: car soap, citrus foam, an all-purpose cleaner and an iron remover, the sequence one coating maker recommends.
- Dry completely. One maker’s care guide warns that minerals left from tap or sprinkler water can etch the surface, and its warranty excludes that damage.
- Feel a few panels with a clean mitt. Slick means coated.
- Mist a dried panel with water and look. Our matte-coating bead check shows how to read it.
If it’s slick and beads again, you’re done. If it still sheets flat but feels slick, the coating is there; the maker above suggests a ceramic sealant used as a drying aid to bring beading back. If it’s grabby and flat, the coating has begun to degrade.
What the fix costs
| Option | Published price | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Coating-safe decon shampoo with iron remover (Gyeon Restart Wash, 500 ml, via Detailed Image) | $23.99 | Cleans and restores coated layers without stripping protection |
| Mineral-removing acid wash (CarPro DeScale, 500 ml, via Car Supplies Warehouse) | $21.99 | Breaks down built-up minerals; for coated cars that lost hydrophobics; not for weekly use |
| Clay bar add-on, mobile (The Detail Society, Greensboro, NC) | $80 | Clay treatment added to a detail |
| Ceramic maintenance wash (Blake’s Detailing and Upholstery Services, location not listed) | $150, 1.5 hours | Removes surface contaminants and cleans the coating while keeping it |
| Yearly warranty inspection (Opti-Coat Pro3) | Not published | Decon wash, clay, polish off scratches; keeps the lifetime warranty |
Prices from the sellers’ pages, checked October 2026. How we research: methodology.
A $22 bottle and an afternoon is the first move. If you’d rather pay, a Greensboro mobile detailer lists a $120 exterior wash with an $80 clay add-on, and another shop sells a ceramic maintenance wash at $150. Either beats arguing about a $1,100 coating.
When it really is the coating
Some coatings do fail early. Replies in the $1,100 thread suspected a spray-on product sold as a coating; our dealer coating packages guide covers that trap. Owner maintenance matters too. That owner had only used self-serve foam and rinse, with no contact wash, so the car had never actually been cleaned.
Read the warranty before you call. One maker’s terms are a limited lifetime warranty with a yearly maintenance check that includes a decon wash, clay and polish, or ten years with no check required. Water-spot etching from tap or sprinkler water isn’t covered. That maker’s care guide also says to avoid automatic brush washes, so check your warranty’s wash rules before you call.
When you do call the installer, bring photos of a washed, fully dried panel in daylight, your wash routine, and the receipt. Ask for an inspection, not a refund, first. If they inspect and refuse, our guide to getting a bad detail fixed covers the next steps. And before paying for a recoat, check the cost per year of coating tiers against what you were sold.
Keep it from clogging again
Repeat the decon wash once or twice a year, as the pro above does, dry fully (our spot-free rinse guide helps with hard water), and consider a ceramic sealant as a drying aid. Water spots that have already set are a separate problem; see water spots on a coated car.
