First-time owners ask this in small-business forums. Here’s how the two compare on things you can check before you spend money.

Prices are retailer list prices checked October 8 and 9, 2026. They change and leave out shipping and tax. The detailing column is the low-end setup from our guide to starting a mobile detailing business. That guide also prices bigger kits with a water rig.
Startup gear, hundreds vs thousands
The biggest difference is the machine. A detailer can wash with a bucket and a rinseless product, then add a pressure washer later. For driveways and siding, the pressure washer is the whole job. You need one built for daily use from day one. The seller describes the 4 GPM belt-drive unit in the table as built for frequent commercial cleaning. A surface cleaner is a separate add-on for flat areas like driveways.
Either way, you need a vehicle to carry it. Our piece on building a mobile detailing rig compares trunk, pickup, van and trailer setups.
Who slows down more in winter
Both trades slow down when it freezes, but not equally. Take Nashville, Tennessee. NOAA’s 1991-2020 normals show about 49 nights from December through February at or below 32°F. They also show about 48 afternoons in those months at 50°F or warmer.
A detailer can fill cold days with interiors. A pressure washer can’t work indoors, and a driveway you just soaked can ice over. One equipment supplier’s winter guide calls frozen water the biggest threat. It says to winterize hoses, tanks and pressure washers before the first freeze.
Our winter guide for mobile detailers shows how to count workable days in your city. Do the same count before you commit to pressure washing, and expect fewer usable days.
Car customers vs house customers
Detailing customers often come back. Cars get dirty again, so some detailers sell a maintenance wash on a schedule. There is business-to-business work too, such as dealer accounts.
Pressure washing customers usually book less often. A house or driveway doesn’t need cleaning every month. Jobs are quoted by the property or surface, not per vehicle. Commercial accounts like storefronts and HOAs bring their own paperwork and scheduling.
Where to check licenses
Rules depend on where you work, so check the official sources. This is not legal or tax advice.
- Start with the SBA. Its launch guide says license requirements and fees vary by business activity, location and government rules.
- Check state business tax. In Tennessee, the Department of Revenue says businesses grossing $100,000 or more generally register for and pay business tax. If you’ll gross less, check the department’s site for what applies to you.
- Ask your city about wash water. Rinse water from either trade can end up in storm drains. See our guide to wash water rules for mobile detailers.
- For pressure washing, ask your state’s contractor board. Some states license work on homes as contractor or home-improvement work. Tennessee’s board, for one, licenses home improvement contractors. Ask before you quote house work.
- Talk to a licensed insurance agent. A scratched car and damaged siding are different risks. Your policy should match the work you actually do.
How crowded is each one?
In Tennessee, Census County Business Patterns counted 371 car wash and detailing locations with employees in 2023. It counted 270 in “other services to buildings and dwellings”, the group that includes building exterior cleaning. Nonemployer Statistics for 2024 counted 2,844 no-employee businesses in the broader automotive group that includes detailing. The broader building-services group had 2,868.
Those groups also hold oil change shops, pool cleaners and chimney sweeps. They aren’t headcounts of detailers or pressure washers. Treat them as a rough sense of scale. Then check your own county and the prices local operators publish.
A quick way to decide
- Short on cash? Detailing lets you start small and add gear as you go.
- Cold winters? Detailing has interiors to fall back on.
- Fine on ladders and with a slow winter? Pressure washing may suit you.
- Not sure? Price both in your town and talk to an insurance agent before you buy anything big.
How we got these numbers
Gear prices come from retailer pages and climate figures from NOAA. Business counts come from Census files downloaded October 9, 2026. Totals are our own math. See our methodology.
