No detailing certificate is a government license.
New owners ask this in detailing forums. One thread asked whether certification is necessary before going mobile. In another, a car wash supply veteran said he’d never heard of the trade association. He suggested a homemade decal would impress customers just as much.
Three kinds of “certified”
- Trade association exams. The main international detailing association runs a two-phase program. Written exams come first, then a hands-on skills test.
- Coating and film maker programs. These approve you to install one brand’s professional products. The approval is tied to that brand’s product access and warranty.
- Training-class certificates. Suppliers and trainers sell classes that end with a certificate. Many show you attended, not that you passed a skills test.
What each one tests and costs
| Credential | Who runs it | What it takes | Published cost | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IDA Certified Detailer (CD) | International Detailing Association | 10 online exams, 80% to pass each | $200 members / $400 non-members | “, CD” after your name and the logo for marketing |
| IDA Skills Validated (CD-SV) | International Detailing Association | CD first, then in-person hands-on tests in 4 areas | $200 members / $400 non-members | “, CD-SV” and eligibility for specialty exams |
| IDA certification upkeep | International Detailing Association | 8 hours of continuing education every 2 years | $100 members / $150 non-members if renewed on time | Keeps the title active |
| Gtechniq Accredited (UK) | Gtechniq | 2+ years in business, 3+ years detailing, full time, insurance, studio, 1 day training, buy 4+ coatings | Monthly marketing fee; amount not listed | Pro-only coating, protected territory, 25% product discount |
| 1-Day Jade Ceramic Coating Certification | Detail King (Pittsburgh) | One day: classroom plus hands-on correction and coating | $895 sale price ($995 list) | Framed certificate as a certified installer of that coating |
Prices as published on each program’s own pages, checked October 9, 2026.
The trade association route
Phase I is ten multiple-choice and true-false exams you can take online. Topics include chemicals, glass, interiors, paint correction and safety. The association says it’s an exam series, not a study course, and it doesn’t supply study materials. You get a free second try on each exam. A third costs $10.
Phase II is a one-on-one practical test with an approved trainer. It covers four areas: wash and prep, interior, exterior correction and finishing. You have to attend in person, and there may not be an event near you.
Do the math before you sign up. A non-member pays $400 plus $400, or $800 for both phases. A member pays $200 plus $200, plus $120 in yearly operator dues. That’s $520 in year one. That’s $280 less. Dues for U.S. operators rise to $125 on January 1, 2027.
The title also expires. Miss the renewal window by more than a year and you have to retake the Phase I exams.
The coating-maker route
This is where certification is most clearly tied to what you can sell. One coating maker’s written warranty says it is void if a non-approved installer applied the product. If you want to sell that brand’s long warranties, you need its approval. Our dealer coating packages guide covers the same rule from the car owner’s side.
These programs can be hard to get into as a mobile operator. One UK coating maker asks for:
- at least two years running your own business
- three years detailing, full time
- insurance
- a minimum coating purchase
It also wants a purpose-built, temperature-controlled studio. If you work from a van, read the requirements before you apply. Our mobile or shop business model guide covers that trade-off.
The training-class route
A Pittsburgh detailing supplier sells a one-day ceramic coating class for $895. It ends with a framed certificate. You pay for the teaching and the hands-on hours. A longtime detailing instructor wrote in a forum that “Certificate of Completion” wording is chosen on purpose. One class can’t prove someone is competent.
What it doesn’t mean legally
A certificate doesn’t replace your business registration, local licenses or insurance. The SBA says local governments set registration, licensing and permit rules. Check your city and county. Texas is a good example. Its governor’s office says the state doesn’t require a general business license. Your state registration covers that role, and specific activities and local permits still apply. Our startup guide lists those steps.
The federal O*NET career database puts vehicle cleaners in a job zone where training ranges from a few days to a year on the job. In other words, nothing in the occupation itself requires a credential.
Is it worth it for you?
- Yes, if you plan to sell a coating line that requires approved installers. Also yes if your clients ask about credentials.
- Maybe, if you’re new and want a structured way to find gaps in your knowledge. The exam set costs less than the one-day class in the table.
- Not yet, if the money would cover insurance, a better polisher or your first ads instead.
Whatever you choose, your work, photos and reviews still have to do the selling. Price the credential into your rates like any tool. Our pricing guide shows how. If you add coatings, see what clients pay in our ceramic coating cost guide.
